From Cold Calling to a Warm Reception

3rd May 2016

Though we don’t use cold calling at as all of our business comes through referrals, we recruit a lot of candidates in this area for our clients. And from what we see, we know it’s not for the faint-hearted either– but there are ways to make it easier! Read on for our few tips, and a lot of cliches.

1. Honesty is the Best Policy

You’re calling up cold to try and generate a lead. You know that. The person on the other end of the phone knows that. The people listening to the person on the other end of the phone know that! Get to the point quickly and be honest as to why you’re calling - keeping it short and sweet.

2. If at First You Don’t Succeed, Try, Try Again

The old adage rings true. For cold callers who call over and over again at the same time, it is easy for the person they’re calling to recognise the number and simply not pick up. Similarly, consistency in the number you call from can lead to a routine the person you’re trying to get hold of gets used to also. Calling at different times of day and from different numbers can be useful in these instances.

3. A Goal Properly Set is Half Way Reached

If you blunder blindly through a list of 80 phone numbers in a day, there’s a good chance you’ll leave for home disappointed and disheartened. And in this instance, quick wins can help as a preventative measure.

Gaining a new bit of industry insight, a new contact, the number of someone else who might be interested in your services, or in some cases, even enjoying the conversation can count as a quick win! Goal setting can help turn cold calling from something that elicits a cold sweat, to something that (at a stretch) might even give you a warm glow.

4. Fail to Prepare, Prepare to Fail

We’re big on preparation. And although reading from a script can be frustrating for the person on the other end of the phone, arming yourself with any commonly asked questions and their answers, in-depth industry knowledge, some well placed notes and a readiness to listen can play dividends on the day.

What We Think

There aren’t many individuals that enjoy the prospect of cold calling, however the worst that can happen is perhaps an irate person on the end of the phone and even in this case, it’s the perfect opportunity to hone your mediation skills!

It’s rarely a pleasant prospect, but considering there’s very little to lose – we respect the craft of cold calling all the same!
