Ageism Rife in the Workplace, According to New Survey

A YouGov survey commissioned by the welfare to work organisation, Avanta, found that 59 per cent of UK citizens believe their age is a barrier to their employment situation. Two thirds of respondents list a lack of available positions as their main employment barrier. The survey shows that there is an older population still willing to contribute to the workforce, while some employers are hesitant to embrace this demographic.

The online survey, also found that older people have to work longer than they did before due to decreasing pension funds. Seventy per cent of those over the age of 55 surveyed are not confident they would be able to find a job quickly if unemployed. More than 2,000 people participated in the nationwide survey.

Eighty-four per cent of those over 55 surveyed would at least consider another type of job from what they had previously done. Nearly 25 per cent would be willing to relocate as opposed to nearly 50% of those 18-24 who would be willing to relocate. The pension age for women will average 65 and older over the next decade, meaning there is a larger potential workforce available for a longer period of time. Some employers favour younger employees who are more technologically minded, but experts warn not to discount experience as a major asset.
