British IT contractors have been laid off by BT’s Global Services Unit. They have been told the reason is they cost too much and that the overseas worker are paid as little as half of what a UK based worker would expect to receive. They have lost out to an Indian firm, who have the necessary skilled workforce and can provide the service at a lower price.
BT defend their decision, as Tech Mahindra provide a skilled staff base and have provided a long established business relationship with them. BT comment that they can no longer afford “expensive contractors.”
This is further evidence that even large scale companies like BT are feeling the recession and squeeze, certainly enough to need to make cut backs.
