Job Figures Rise with Employer Optimism

According to figures released in December’s Reed Job Index, job opportunities have climbed to their highest level in nearly two years. Compared with November 2010, employers’ demand for new workers was 20% higher in November 2011. The numbers contrast sharply with what Brits have grown accustomed to: dismal economic forecasts.

The Reed Index indicates that the jobs growth has been strongest in London, the North-West and the South-East. Areas experiencing recent falls in employer demand include the North-East of England, Scotland and Wales. Overall, growth was observed in seven of the twelve areas observed.

The numbers reflect an increase in hiring across a range of sectors. These are led by technical positions, such as those in information technology and engineering, and are followed by increased job openings in service sectors such as financial management and tourism. Jobs activity in the public sector has fallen.

Every month, the Reed Job Index compares the number of new job opportunities and their salaries against a baseline set in December 2009. The index recorded 119,426 jobs in October 2011 and 122,986 in November 2011. In November 2010, there were only 102,952 job offerings. The index was established in December 2009 with approximately 91,000 jobs.
