More and more job recruiting is done online, especially in engineering and production fields. Research by online employment sites has shown, however, that a large percentage of these new jobs are only part time.
A report by Monster.com, stated that job offerings posted on career websites had risen by 8% last year, a figure not seen since late 2008. Michael Gentle, of Monster, said:
“With ONS (Office for National Statistics) figures showing unemployment edging downward and employment rising by 376,000 people over the year, the UK certainly has reason to feel comforted by an expanding job market.”
“However, a lot of new employment opportunities have come in the form of part-time work, especially in sectors like construction where firms are recruiting but not for long-term positions.
Gentle admitted that the temporary nature of the work available suggests the economy is not as steady and expanding as a simple growth in job listings may imply. However, core sectors of industry are seeing an expansion of employment, which generally hints at the viability of a widespread economic growth in other areas of industry. In the South West especially, manufacturing positions such as machine operators, craft jobs, and assembly workers saw the largest influx of online job listings.
