IT Jobs to increase in 2012

Pete Healey, director of sales for The IT Job Board, reports that his clients plan to significantly expand their IT departments this year. Project managers, IT security experts and Java coders are among the technology professionals expected to have top employment prospects.

SQL Experts in High Demand

Healey’s website reported in December 2011 that SQL jobs represented the greatest area of demand in the IT sector. Alexandra Farrell, managing director for the site, thus anticipates a wave of retraining in SQL skills as IT professionals vie for top positions.

Cloud-Related Job Growth

The trend toward cloud computing is also spurring job growth in information technology. As clients move data from their own hard drives to remote servers, the need for web-based applications such as .NET and Java is soaring. Additionally, the move away from local storage is fuelling demand for IT security professionals.

Permanent and Contract Positions

Although employers anticipate business expansion in 2012, many are hesitant to offer permanent positions. Contract work is becoming increasingly common. Healey reports that 26 percent of positions advertised on website are for independent contractors.
