As companies begin to roll out projects held over by the recession, a skills shortage for IT-related work has been forecast by two of the UK’s leading advisory groups.
An analysis performed by Innovantage, a leading provider of UK real-time labour data, and Staffing Industry Analysts, a worldwide advisor on contingency work, reveals that IT-related job vacancies have increased by 28% from last year as the UK economy pulls out of its recent slowdown. Innovantage/SIA statistics cited 90,416 new IT positions being advertised on job boards in May 2011, compared to 70,912 in May 2010.
The Association of Professional Staffing Companies, who included the data in its recent Monthly Trends report, claims growing demand for IT skills in areas such as finance, retail and the media. Many such jobs have been created as companies begin to execute projects that were set aside during the economic downturn.
Ann Swain, Chief Executive of APSCo, reports that the growing number of IT positions may result in a shortage of skilled professionals in certain areas. These areas may grow at rates faster than jobs can be filled by capable staff. Swain also noted that investment in technology is logical after the recession, since IT is judged important to competitive advantage.
