Improving & Maintaining Relationships With Superiors

We came across an interesting article from Forbes recently, which looked at some ways to improve and maintain relationships with bosses, managers and superiors. Below, we have summarised accordingly.

A strong and healthy relationship with your superiors is essential for a number of reasons, one of the most important being their influence over your daily life. They can have a direct impact on how much you enjoy your job and how much stress you experience; they can influence how exciting your working hours are or – or equally how dreadful they can be. All of these things can manifest themselves in physical health problems.

From a career point of view, they also guard the door to your advancement within (or without) the company. Whilst you still work there they will be key to gaining those higher positions and promotions – if you leave and you don’t have a good relationship, you can’t rely on them for a glowing reference.

Relationships with your superiors are much like other relationships in life: you’re only going to get out of it what you put into it. Clear communication is vital, otherwise small workplace issues can spiral and snowball out of control. A recent study showed that almost 70% of employees believe their managers’ behaviour sets a good precedent – whilst 92% claim that their managers adhere to values of good behaviour and leadership.

Engaging within the relationship is a task for both sides, but it’s up to the employees to open this dialogue so that the lines of communication are there when they’re needed most. 84% of surveyed employees recently rated their relationships with superiors as good, great or excellent.
