Celebrating Our Best Bosses: From Donning Dancing Shoes to Sharing Responsibility

Dancing Shoes
With the gloom of January behind us and the start of February bringing cold, rain and more cold we thought we’d lighten the mood with a celebration of some of our best bosses and the qualities they possess.

Happy Feet

Inspired by a viral video of a boss dancing for his staff, we think this man deserves a medal! Chase Carlson of Super Target manages around 230 workers. He shared a video of himself dancing (excellently we might add!) around the store with his employees to add an element of fun to their workday.

Not only does he have some serious moves – we love his leadership style. Why shouldn’t work be good fun after all?! View it here.

This wonderful boss says of the video:

“I love to make people smile and love to come to work. That’s my way; [that’s how] I engage with the team. I try to make this place as fun as possible to work at. Hopefully we can make another one that’s better. Keep the people laughing and keep the culture high here in Urbandale.”

Other Best Boss Stories

With bosses often in executive positions and commanding big salaries, the pressures can be immense. Between handling and nurturing staff and meeting tough targets, stress levels can be high and whilst some may flounder, others shine. Below are some more stories of great bosses from their employees:

  • Temper Tantrum: One boss was very angry and foul-mouthed… yet his team loved him! One employee shared how they always knew exactly where they stood and if someone was mean to one of his employees he fiercely protected his team – and had an even shorter temper!
  • Positivity Through Mistakes: Another employee spoke of their boss’s shared ownership over mistakes. After apologising profusely for one such mistake, this person’s boss emphasised that mistakes were often made because of poor instructions, not poor employees, sharing the responsibility for the error.

 Executive Qualities

Forbes published an excellent piece looking at the qualities that make a great boss using examples from major corporations to do so. The results were;
  • Passion: Although this word is an oft overused one in resumes, the article shares that unforgettable bosses tend to be incredibly passionate about what they do. They believe in their purpose, and have fun at work.
  • Responsibility: Rather than blaming others and throwing their team under the bus, great bosses take responsibility and work hard to fix situations themselves.
  • Chess, not Checkers: Great bosses play chess – and by this we mean they recognise that each member of their team (or piece on their chess board) has a unique value and role to play.
  • Straight-Talking: Great bosses are who they are, all the time.
  • Effective under Pressure: Some people can take pressure, others can’t – excellent bosses can!

Other traits cited include being human and humble.

So, whether your boss is dancing around the office or shouting at anyone trying to take a dig at his team, celebrate them for making your work a great place to be!
